5 Ways to Keep your Auto Shop Accident Free

Posted by Lauren Middleton on Apr 8th 2019

Summer is coming and I bet your garage is starting to see an uptick in business. Chances are customers are going to coming in for after winter maintenance like snow tire removal and oil changes. Things will probably get busy and there is likely to be a little bit of chaos and confusion. With this chaos and confusion, there are bound to be a few accidents that will happen to employees. To prevent accidents, it is great to have a safe place to work all year around.

Today's article will be on 5 ways to keep your auto shop accident free.

1. Keep all your chemicals organized and sealed. Anti freeze, paint, oil, and other chemicals can be deadly if inhaled. They can also cause chemical burns. Be sure your employees know how to handle these chemicals properly. Also, make sure they are safely stored away.

2. Observe fire safety. Make sure your smoke detectors are all working and keep up fire extinguishers on hand. Auto repair shops are notorious for fires. Gasoline and other flammable liquids should be kept sealed and stored safely.

3. Make sure you have safety equipment on hand.  Safety glasses, gloves and respirators are all important things you should have on hand. Make sure your employees pass a safety test when starting and are aware that these items are available to keep them safe and injury free.

4.Watch out for slip and fall hazards. There are quite a bit of things in your repair shop that can cause slips and falls. You can prevent these falls by requiring your employees to wear non slip shoes and providing something that quickly absorbs spills. Loose tools and things out of place can also cause slips and falls. Encourage employees to be diligent about cleaning up messes.

5. Provide your employees with training. Many accidents occur because employees simply are not trained well enough to use shop equipment. Lifts, tools and even vehicles themselves can cause serious injury. It is your responsibility as a business owner to make sure your employees are well trained in safety.
