Leaving your car unprotected in summer heat can lead to some unintended consequences. One of the most common things that is susceptible to summer heat damage is your car’s paint and interior. Summer weather can also affect your car’s battery and tires. You can read up on that on one of our previous articles. With the first day of summer on the way our article this week will focus on minimizing the damage from summer weather on your car.

Storing a car properly in the summer

You should store your vehicle in the garage in summer whenever possible. If the car is inside, it will not be exposed to damaging elements such as UV light, harsh weather, and pollen. If you do not have a way to store your car inside, investing a decent car covering will help as well. Keeping the car inside or covered will also shield the interior from harmful sun rays. Car upholstery can and will fade in the sun. Your car’s interior will also remain cooler which will allow the AC to work faster and ensure that you don’t have to way to get into the car while the hot air comes out.

Wash and wax your car to prevent summer damage.

Hot asphalt and bugs can stick like glue to your car’s exterior. Once they adhere, it is very hard to remove them. As soon as your car comes into contact with hot asphalt, be sure to wash it at home or bring it to a professional car wash. Bugs are a common summer problem for drivers trying to keep their car clean. When you go for an extended ride on your car, be sure to check the grill and front of the car for stuck on dead insects. It is better to remove these sooner than later but if the dead bugs are really stuck on, you might need a special cleaner (Goo Gone) to remove them. Always wax the car when you are finished washing it. Wax acts a protective barrier between grime and the paint can keep the stuff that damages the car’s paint at bay.
