Four Ways to Prevent Rust on your Stainless Steel Bumper

Winter in New England is always a challenge for drivers. Besides having to deal with hazardous driving conditions from the weather, drivers must consistently wash their vehicles to remove the salt build up that can cause rust and corrosion. Trucks are driven more consistently in winter because they are used to plow snow and are equipped with four-wheel drive. Many trucks are equipped with stainless steel bumpers, and they often end up rusting first. With winter on the way, the time is now to prepare your bumper from winter to prevent rust. Here are four ways to prevent rust on your stainless steel bumper.

Remove rust as soon as you see it.

Stainless steel will rust and become corroded if it not properly maintained. As soon as rust appears, you should remove it right away. Spray the area with rust remover and use a scrub brush to scrub the rust against the grain. Keep in mind that this removal is a slow process and may require several attempts to completely remove the rust.

Keep your steel truck bumper clean.

Keeping your trucks bumper free of rust means you have to keep it clean. With winter on the way, the bumper may pick up salt and bits of sand that leave a residue which will eventually lead to rust. The best way to clean your trucks bumper is with oil free soap, hot water, and a sponge. Rinse away the soap with clean water and then wipe it down with a lint free towel. If the bumper is made of stainless steel, you can also use wax on it for further protection.

Paint your truck bumper to prevent rust.

High quality paint can minimize rust by preventing moisture from reaching the metal. Another method painting the bumper involves a process called powder coating. Powder coating offers a barrier and prevents moisture contact. Standard powder coating liquid is made from epoxy, urethane, and nylon. It easily adheres to the bumper metal and forms a thin, yet protective film on the bumper.

Invest in a high-quality steel bumper.

Stock bumpers are often made from steel that is lower quality. If you are really determined to keep your bumper rust free, you may want to invest in a bumper that is made from higher quality steel. High quality steel bumpers often have the following features: they are created from 100% steel, they have a lifetime warranty, they are made with high end welding, and contain a CNC plate.
