Avoiding Damage to Your Vehicle in the Winter

Winter is on its way and with this season comes cold weather and car damage. Slippery roads, salt, and other drivers can all damage your vehicle. The national weather service is predicting a warm and wet winter, however, this does not mean driving will be safer. Warm and wet weather usually means sleet and freezing rain which is often more dangerous than snow. Use the following tips for safe winter driving practices.

The easiest way to avoid winter damage to your car is to simply not go out. Unfortunately, many Americans still have to commute to work in severe winter storms. If you are committed to driving in harsh weather, take the steps below to help ensure your commute is safe.

  • Leave early to allow extra time.
  • Go slow and stay at least 8 to 10 seconds behind the car in front of you.
  • Bring an emergency kit with you. Cat litter, a shovel, a blanket, flares, and water.

You should have the car tuned up before winter. Make sure the fluid levels are correct and check your tires. Worn and deflated tires make it easier for the vehicle to skid. It is also usually a good idea to make sure you have a full gas tank before heading out in a storm. Nothing is worse than running out of gas while waiting in traffic caused by bad weather. Having a full tank will also decrease the chances of your gas line freezing.

You should also drive with your headlights on to increase your visibility when driving in snow or rain. It also makes it easier for other drivers to see you. This is especially important on highways where large trucks often drive.

To prevent damage from salt and deicer to the undercarriage and paint, be sure to regularly wash your vehicle. Try to select a garage that has an option to rinse the car’s undercarriage. A lot of damage can occur while brushing snow off the car. In their rush to get to work in the storm, many vehicle owners push the snow off of their cars with instruments have sharp edges. This leads to paint and body damage. Try to use a specialized tool with a soft brush for snow removal.
