Body Filler is a frequently used substance in the field of auto body. It is a 2 part polyester resin often called “Bondo”. Because Auto Body Specialties carries several auto body related parts, we often encounter customers asking how to use Body Filler properly. It can actually be a complicated process to utilize Body Filler properly so our article focus this week will be on 5 tips for using Body Filler correctly.

.You always want to prime the surface before applying Body Filler. The best way to do this is with a Scotch Brite pad that has a grit of 220. Use the pad to scuff the surface of the metal so the Body Filler will adhere properly. Make sure you prime the metal before scuffing it with the pad. After you are done buffing, you’ll want to remove all the dust so it does not mix in with the Body Filler.

.You’ll want to measure the surface of where you are applying the Body Filler to. If you have to keep remixing the Body Filler, it can lead to an inconsistent level of hardness and won’t leave enough time to apply the Body Filler before it turns into gel. If you end up mixing too much Body Filler, you’ll end up wasting a lot.

.The best tool to apply Body Filler with is a plastic or metal spreader. Use it to apply about an eighth of an inch of filler over the damaged area. Press down on the metal and apply thin coats until the dents are filled. Don’t go over the Body Filler more than one with the spreader as it can lead to dust, debris and air pockets accumulating.

.It is best to not use Body Filler on dents that are more than one quarter inch deep. Any deeper than that and the Body Filler may fall off, shrink or crack. Remember that you only have 3 minutes to start spreading the Body Filler before it turns to a gel and becomes impossible to work with. Waiting too long can also cause the filler not adhere to anything.

.Make sure you utilize the proper personal protection equipment when using Body Filler. The fumes from Body Filler aren’t over whelming but you should still use a respirator mask and gloves when using it. You’ll also want to use the personal protection equipment when sanding and painting. Make sure you also are doing to the Body Filler work in a place with adequate ventilation.
