Great Tips on How to Install Floor Pans and Cab Mounts

Posted by Lauren Middleton on Dec 6th 2020

Auto Body Specialties sells 2 particular products that are extremely popular. These are our Complete Floor Plan Kits and our Cab Mounts. The Floor Plan Kits are commonly used with classic Dodge and Plymouth cars and the Cab Mounts are typically purchased for classic and newer Dodge Rams. We get a lot of questions every week as to how to install these. Because these items are both so popular, we compiled a list of great tips on how to install Floor Pans and Cab Mounts.

Complete Floor Pan Kit

Our Dodge and Plymouth Floor Pan Kit is one of our most popular items. Auto Body Specialties is one of only 2 dealers in Connecticut that sell this kit. Here are some tips on how to install the Floor Pan Kit properly.

  • Remove the gas line and tank before cutting out the old Floor Pan kit.
  • Use sheet metal screws to temporarily hold the new pan in place while welding.
  • Make sure the body of the vehicle is braced before welding begins.
  • Remove anything that blocks access to the floor of the vehicle.
  • When welding, use C clamps to hold things in place.
  • Only weld one section at a time.
  • Use a high quality cutting tool.
  • Mark out your cut out lines first from the old Floor Pan.
  • Try using butt or plug welds for installation.
  • Seam seal and paint seal both sides of the floor panel after installation.
  • Cab Mounts

Our selection of cab mounts have been number one on our list of best selling products for 3 years. Like our floor plan kits, the Cab Mounts are popular because we are one of only 2 auto body supplier stores that carry them in Connecticut.

  • Use a jack and lift the vehicle just high enough to remove the Cab Mounts. Lifting too high may damage the body panels.
  • When jacking the vehicle up, place the jack on the brace of the cab.
  • Remove the fuel line and raise/remove the gas tank to gain better access for the Cab Mount installation.
  • Drill from the cab side of the truck. This will prevent metal shavings from falling on you because you won’t have to lay upside down.
  • You might have to use more than one size of drill bit to install the new mounts.
  • Seal the mount with paint before installing it. Do the painting a few weeks in advance so it completely dries.
  • If the bolts are not coming loose, apply some penetrating oil on them for a few days.
  • Make sure you out chucks on your tires even if the car is on a lift.
  • Don’t tighten all of the cab mount bolts until you have all 4 installed.
