If you’re going to drive it regularly, excessive sediment from left over gas in the tank could cause a lot of problems for the engine. Gas that has been sitting a long time may end up in an altered state which is what causes the sediment to settle in the tank.

You can smell gas.

The smell of gas can come from a variety of places but there is a high chance it may have come from your gas tank. This is a very dangerous problem, and you should not drive the vehicle until you find out where the odor is coming from. Have an auto technician take a look at your gas tank. They are likely to know whether a new gas tank will be needed.

The gas tank is dented or damaged.

A dented gas tank can cause damage to the fuel pump and its mountings. The damage could also leave the chance for leaks to start. If you notice that the car’s gas tank is bent or cracked in anyway, it is best to have it replace it.
