Storing your car for the winter may seem simple, move it into a garage or storage facility, throw a cover over it and you’re done right? Not quite, there are actually several things you can do to keep your car in top shape while it takes a winter rest. Taking steps to properly store the car in the winter will ensure it starts up smoothly in spring. Storing it properly will also ensure it doesn’t get damaged while in winter storage.

1.Do a last oil change. Having fresh oil an lubricated parts will make the first ride in spring much easier.

2.Check your coolant level. If you are storing the car somewhere that isn’t climate controlled you’ll want to make sure you have antifreeze. If it is mixed with too much water, it may freeze and expand. This will cause some very costly damage.

3.You’ll want to unhook your battery because the car will not be used for 3 months. Battery cables can actually crack the battery case and internals. Batteries also tend to drain faster in cold weather. After disconnecting the battery, be sure to store it somewhere climate controlled such as a basement.

4.Block off any potential place where rodents can sneak in. This includes your exhaust and intake. There’s nothing worse than taking the car out in the spring and finding mice have taken up residence in it. Mice can make nests in the engine too so make sure to check that as well. When spring rolls around don’t forget to take the items you used to block off the exhaust out before driving!

5.Wash and wax the car. You don’t want any debris or substance scratching or damaging the paint while the car sits for the winter. This is especially important if you plan to us a tarp which will rub dirt and debris into the paint when you put it on.

6.Put a vehicle cover over the car. This will keep dust from forming on the vehicle. It will also protect it from anything that may fall on it.
