Truck Restoration Tips

Posted by Lauren Middleton on Jan 28th 2020

If you have chosen to take on the project of restoring an old truck, Auto Body Specialties is here to help you. From floor mats to cab mounts, we have everything you need to make your restoration project a success. Because we have seen increasing popularity in this type of restoration, our article this week will be on truck restoration tips. Restoring any vehicle can be a lengthy, complicated, and expensive project, but hopefully the experience will be much easier if you follow these simple tips.

First, you’ll want to find out how much this project will cost. You’ll need to come up with a budget as well as a list of things you will need. In this budget you will have to decide if you want to try to outfit the truck with antique parts or modern ones. Modern ones can certainly be easier to find but most want a more “authentic” look and opt for antiques. You’ll also have to check whether the truck’s frame is structurally sound which means you may have to add paying someone to check it to your budget and plan.

Here are some other items you may find useful to have during the restoration project.

  • Engine hoist
  • Floor jacks
  • Complete set of quality automotive tools
  • Factory shop manual
  • Digital camera
  • Shop rags
  • Partner for heavy work
  • Paper and plastic bags
  • Blank tags

After planning out your budget, you’ll have to find a place to do the restoration. Ideally it should be enclosed and have a place to store tools. Although it is okay to do some work outdoors, doing a lot of work outside can lead to paint issues and exposes you to the elements. If you do have a place to work indoors, make sure that it is adequately ventilated. Truck restoration often exposes you to harmful fumes from paint and power tools.

Besides the tools you’ll need to complete the restoration, you’ll have to make sure you have the proper equipment to assist yourself in the restoration process. Since trucks are usually higher than cars, you’ll have to make sure you can reach the higher spots like the cab roof and hood. A sturdy ladder should do the trick. You should also make sure you have the proper PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) on hand for your truck project. Gloves and respirators can go a long way in keeping you injury free during the process.

To help keep your inspiration and momentum up, one truck restoration expert suggests take photos from the internet and using them to plan out what your end goal should be. He also suggested taking several photos of your project so you know how things are put back together, where bolts go, and any areas of the truck that need extra attention.
